# GEO vs SEO: What the Data Says About AI Citations and Rankings

> Only 12% of AI-cited URLs rank in Google's top 10, yet page-1 rankings correlate ~0.65 with LLM mentions. What the data says about GEO vs SEO.

GEO (generative engine optimization) earns citations in AI-generated answers; SEO earns rankings in traditional search results. The two overlap but do not substitute each other. Ranking on page 1 of Google correlates ~0.65 with brand mentions in LLM answers, yet only 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants rank in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. The practical conclusion: keep SEO as the foundation and treat GEO as a distinct optimization layer on top.

## What is the actual difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm that returns a list of links; GEO optimizes for a language model that writes a single answer and decides which sources to cite. The judge changes, so the scoreboard changes.

In SEO, the surfaces are Google and Bing, and success means position. In GEO, the surfaces are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, and success means being mentioned or cited inside the generated response. Even the measurement differs: the foundational Princeton research scores visibility as position-adjusted word count — how much of the answer talks about you, and how early. If the term is new to you, start with our primer on [what GEO is and how it works](/blog/what-is-geo).

## Do Google rankings predict AI citations?

Partly. The correlation is real, but it is nowhere near a guarantee. According to [Seer Interactive](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/what-drives-brand-mentions-in-ai-answers) (January 2025), which ran 10,000 finance and SaaS questions through the GPT-4o API, brands ranking on page 1 of Google showed a strong ~0.65 correlation with LLM mentions. Bing rankings also correlated, but less (~0.5-0.6). Backlinks — the classic SEO currency — showed weak or neutral impact, and multimodal content moved the needle less than expected.

Correlation is not causation: models may simply reward the same qualities Google rewards. The counterweight comes from [Ahrefs](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-search-overlap/) (August 2025): across 15,000 prompts analyzed with Brand Radar, only 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants rank in Google's top 10 for the original prompt, and roughly 80% of citations from non-Perplexity assistants do not rank at all for that query. [Semrush](https://www.semrush.com/blog/ai-search-seo-traffic-study/) (July 2025) adds that ChatGPT cites pages ranking in positions 21+ approximately 90% of the time.

## Which AI platforms overlap most with Google's top 10?

Google's own AI Overviews reward classic SEO the most; standalone chatbots reward it the least. Here is the overlap picture across studies:

| AI surface | Overlap with classic rankings | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | 76% of citations come from top-10 pages | Ahrefs, Aug 2025 |
| Perplexity | 28.6% of cited URLs in Google top 10 | Ahrefs, Aug 2025 |
| ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot | ~6-8% of cited URLs in Google top 10 | Ahrefs, Aug 2025 |
| SearchGPT vs Bing top 20 | over 87% of citations match | Seer Interactive, Feb 2025 |
| SearchGPT vs Google results | 56% of citations match | Seer Interactive, Feb 2025 |
| AI Overview links vs organic top 10 | 20-26% overlap | Semrush, Sept 2024 data (US) |

Two nuances matter. First, [Semrush's study of 200,000 AI Overviews](https://www.semrush.com/blog/ai-overviews-study/) (US data, September 2024) found the #1 organic result appears inside the AI Overview only 46% of the time on desktop and 34% on mobile — even the top spot buys no seat at the table. Second, Ahrefs notes that assistants use query fan-out and Reciprocal Rank Fusion rather than replicating a single ranking. We unpack that retrieval pipeline in [how AI engines pick their citations](/blog/how-ai-engines-cite).

## Why does ChatGPT lean on Bing rather than Google?

The citation data points squarely at Bing's index. [Seer Interactive](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/87-percent-of-searchgpt-citations-match-bings-top-results) (February 2025) analyzed 500+ SearchGPT citations across 100 questions: more than 87% matched Bing's top 20 organic results — most within positions 1-10 — while the match with Google's results was only 56%.

> "For a platform that's dominated search for decades, Google's 56% citation match in SearchGPT may be a wake-up call."
> — Seer Interactive, February 2025

The operational takeaway for a small business: your Bing presence is no longer optional. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and check how you rank there, because SearchGPT's citations overlap heavily with Bing's top results, so your Bing visibility is a practical proxy worth watching.

## Which SEO foundations does GEO inherit?

Every GEO win still starts with crawlability: if a bot cannot fetch and parse your page, it cannot cite you. Indexation, clean site architecture, sensible headings and fast server-side rendering gate both disciplines equally — the same [technical SEO foundations](/blog/technical-seo-foundations) apply before any AI-specific work makes sense.

The overlap data reinforces this. A ~0.65 correlation with page-1 rankings (Seer) and 76% of AI Overview citations coming from top-10 pages (Ahrefs) mean classic ranking work still moves AI visibility, especially on Google's own surfaces. That is why we run a conventional [SEO audit](/services/seo) before touching anything GEO-specific: intent-matched content and demonstrable expertise remain the base layer.

## What does GEO add that SEO does not cover?

Three levers with measured effects, none of which classic SEO playbooks prioritize:

1. **Quotations, statistics and cited sources.** The [GEO paper by Aggarwal et al.](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735) (Princeton et al., KDD 2024) showed optimizing for generative engines can boost visibility by up to 40% — with the caveat that this measures position-adjusted word count, not traffic. Adding quotations, statistics and source references delivered 30-40% improvements across GEO-bench's 10,000 queries.
2. **Brand mentions across the web.** [Ahrefs](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-brand-correlation/) (May 2025) ran Spearman correlations across 75,000 brands: web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, far above backlinks at 0.218. Brands in the top quartile for mentions average 169 AI Overview appearances — over 10x the next quartile down.
3. **Freshness.** According to figures compiled by [Position Digital](https://www.position.digital/blog/ai-seo-statistics/) from a Seer Interactive analysis of 5,000+ cited URLs, 65% of AI bot hits targeted content published in the last year, and 89% within the last three years.

Equally important is what does not work: the same Princeton paper tested keyword stuffing as a GEO method and found it contributed almost nothing in generative engines.

## Can smaller sites win AI citations without ranking first?

Yes — and this is the most encouraging finding in the research for any SME. In the Princeton experiments, the Cite Sources method redistributed visibility away from the incumbent:

> "a substantial 115.1% increase in visibility for websites ranked fifth in SERP, while on average, the visibility of the top-ranked website decreased by 30.3%"
> — Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, June 2024

Combine that with the Ahrefs finding that most chatbot citations come from outside Google's top 10, and the strategic picture is clear: generative engines are a second front where a well-sourced page 2 site can outperform a complacent number 1.

## Is AI traffic worth optimizing for yet?

The volume is still small; the value per visit is not. Reports compiled by [The Digital Bloom](https://thedigitalbloom.com/learn/gen-ai-website-traffic-share-february-2026/) (February 2026) place AI-referred traffic between ~0.13% of average web visits (Similarweb) and ~1.08% of sessions (Conductor, 13,770 domains) — a fraction of organic search.

Quality tells a different story. [Semrush](https://www.semrush.com/blog/ai-search-seo-traffic-study/) (July 2025) calculates the average AI search visitor is worth 4.4 times the average organic visitor by conversion rate — measured on ~500 digital-marketing and SEO topics, so it may not generalize to every sector. [Similarweb](https://www.similarweb.com/blog/marketing/geo/gen-ai-stats/) (May 2026) found ChatGPT referrals convert at 7.1%, second only to paid search (7.8%) and ahead of direct, organic, social, email and display; total AI-referred visits grew more than 3x between September 2024 and September 2025.

Citations also protect classic clicks. Per [Seer Interactive's 2026 update](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/aio-impact-on-google-ctr-2026-update) (April 2026; 53 brands, 5.47M queries, 2,430M organic impressions), being cited inside the AI Overview delivers +120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited (~20,743 vs ~9,445 clicks per million impressions) — though such queries still yield 38% fewer clicks than queries without an AI Overview. Scale is compounding too: Semrush notes ChatGPT passed 800 million weekly active users, an 8x jump between October 2023 and April 2025, and projects — a projection, not a fact — that in its analyzed niche, AI-search visits would overtake traditional search visits by early 2028.

## What changed for European businesses in 2025?

Generative search stopped being a US-only phenomenon on March 26, 2025, when Google activated AI Overviews in Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Poland, Portugal and Switzerland, as reported by [Search Engine Land](https://searchengineland.com/google-rolls-out-ai-overviews-in-eu-regions-453595) (March 2025). In Italy, they launched in both Italian and English.

Bear in mind that most overlap studies — including Semrush's 200,000-keyword analysis — use US data collected before the European rollout. European SERPs are younger terrain, which is precisely why measuring your own market beats importing US benchmarks.

## What should an SME do this week?

A practical sequence that costs mostly time, ordered by leverage:

1. **Check bot access.** Review robots.txt against the AI crawler user-agents each provider publishes in its own documentation, and confirm your key pages render without JavaScript. No access, no citation.
2. **Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools.** With over 87% of SearchGPT citations matching Bing's top 20 (Seer), Bing rankings are now a GEO input.
3. **Upgrade your three most important pages with sources.** Add verifiable statistics, expert quotations and cited references — the levers worth 30-40% in the Princeton tests.
4. **Record a baseline.** Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google (with AI Overviews) the questions your customers ask, and log whether you are mentioned and which sources get cited. Without a before, there is no honest after.
5. **Refresh cornerstone content.** The reported freshness bias favors recently published or updated pages, so date your updates visibly.

If you would rather have the baseline measured and the fixes implemented for you, that is exactly what our [AI visibility service](/services/ai-visibility) does — audit first, measurement before and after, and every number labeled as measured, calculated or assumed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does GEO replace SEO?

No. The data shows they reinforce each other: Seer Interactive measured a ~0.65 correlation between ranking on page 1 of Google and being mentioned in LLM answers, across 10,000 finance and SaaS questions run through the GPT-4o API — a correlation, not proof of causation — and 76% of AI Overview citations come from the organic top 10, per Ahrefs. SEO remains the foundation; GEO adds a separate layer, because in chatbots like ChatGPT only 6-8% of cited URLs come from Google's top 10, also per Ahrefs.

### If I already rank in Google's top 10, will ChatGPT cite me?

It is not guaranteed. Ahrefs found that only 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants rank in Google's top 10 for the original prompt, and Semrush found ChatGPT cites pages ranking in positions 21+ about 90% of the time. ChatGPT also leans far more on Bing: over 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top 20 results, versus 56% for Google, per Seer Interactive.

### What does GEO add that SEO does not already cover?

Three things measured in studies. First, content with quotations, statistics and cited sources, which raised visibility by 30-40% in the Princeton GEO paper — where visibility means position-adjusted word count, a share-of-answer metric, not traffic or clicks. Second, brand mentions across the web, which correlate with AI Overview visibility (0.664) far more than backlinks (0.218), per Ahrefs. Third, freshness and structure that models can extract easily.

### Is GEO worth the investment if AI still sends little traffic?

Volume is small, roughly 0.1% to 1% of visits according to figures reported from Similarweb and Conductor, but quality is high. Semrush, an SEO vendor, calculates the average AI search visitor is worth 4.4 times the average organic visitor by conversion rate — measured on about 500 digital-marketing and SEO topics, so it may not generalize to every sector. Similarweb measured ChatGPT referrals converting at 7.1%, second only to paid search. Being cited inside an AI Overview also delivers +120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited on the same kind of query (~20,743 vs ~9,445 clicks per million impressions), per Seer Interactive's 2026 update — though queries with an AI Overview still yield 38% fewer clicks overall than queries without one.

### Do old SEO tactics like keyword stuffing work for GEO?

No. The Princeton paper presented at KDD 2024 tested keyword stuffing as a GEO method and found gains that were null or below the starting point in generative engine responses. What did work was adding quotations, statistics and verifiable sources.

### Can GEO help a small business that does not rank first on Google?

Yes, and it is one of the most interesting findings. In the Princeton paper, the Cite Sources method increased visibility — position-adjusted word count, a share-of-answer metric, not traffic or rankings — by 115.1% for the site ranked fifth in the SERP, while the top-ranked site lost 30.3% on average. Since most chatbot citations come from outside Google's top 10, there is room to compete without being number 1.
