AI Search Adoption in Europe: What the 2026 Data Shows
ChatGPT search reached 120.4 million monthly EU users, and 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click to the open web in early 2026 (US clickstream data).
AI search has moved from novelty to mainstream in Europe. ChatGPT search reached approximately 120.4 million average monthly active recipients in the EU by September 2025, according to OpenAI’s mandatory DSA disclosure, and 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click to the open web in early 2026 (US clickstream data). AI engines still send only about 1% of website traffic on average (Conductor) — but according to Semrush, the average visit from AI search is 4.4 times as valuable as the average visit from traditional organic search, based on conversion rate.
How many people use AI search in Europe in 2026?
More than most businesses assume, and the key figures are no longer vendor estimates. OpenAI announced 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers on February 27, 2026 — up from the 800 million reported in October 2025 — as covered by TechCrunch (February 2026).
For Europe there is a rare luxury: regulated data. Under the EU Digital Services Act, OpenAI must publish user counts. Its disclosure declared approximately 120.4 million average monthly active recipients of ChatGPT search in the EU for the six months ending September 30, 2025, as reported by Euronews (October 2025) — far above the 45-million threshold that defines a “very large online platform”.
The trend line matters more than the snapshot. According to OpenAI’s DSA help-center page, the series runs like this:
| Six-month period ending | ChatGPT search, avg. monthly active recipients (EU) | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| March 31, 2025 | ~41.3 million | Reported (OpenAI DSA help page, snippet) |
| September 30, 2025 | ~120.4 million | Verified (Euronews, DSA disclosure) |
| March 31, 2026 | ~159.1 million | Reported (OpenAI DSA help page, snippet) |
That is almost 4x in twelve months. We label the first and last figures “reported” because we only saw them in snippets — OpenAI’s DSA help page and Search Engine Land — not in a document we could open in full. That is the same honesty rule we apply to any client number.
Italy shows the same curve at national scale. In April 2025, 8.8 million Italians used the ChatGPT app each month, against 2.4 million in April 2024 and 750,000 in April 2023, according to Audicom/Audiweb data analyzed by Il Sole 24 Ore’s Info Data (July 2025). 37% of Italian students use it, with adoption strongest among 18–24-year-olds. Rivals trailed that month: Gemini at 2.3–2.8 million, Copilot at 1.9–2.7 million, Perplexity around 270,000, Claude around 158,000.
Google pushed AI answers into European results too: AI Overviews launched in Italy on March 26, 2025, together with Spain, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Ireland and Switzerland.
Why do fewer searches end in a click?
Because the answer increasingly appears before any link does. Similarweb US clickstream data analyzed by SparkToro (June 2026) shows 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click to the open web in January–April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. A decade ago the figure was around 45%. When an AI Overview appears, click-through rates fall by approximately 60%.
Pew Research Center (July 2025) measured the mechanics on a panel of 900 US adults and 68,879 real searches from March 2025:
- With an AI summary present, users clicked a traditional result only 8% of the time, versus 15% without one.
- Only 1% of visits with an AI Overview produced a click on a source cited inside the summary.
- 26% of pages with an AI summary ended the browsing session entirely, against 16% without.
- 18% of all analyzed searches triggered an AI summary.
One caveat we insist on: both datasets are US panels, so extrapolate to Europe with caution. But AI Overviews have been live in Italy and Spain since March 2025, so the mechanism is already operating here. The practical consequence is identical: when the answer box resolves the query, your brand exists only if it is cited inside that answer. That is the exact problem generative engine optimization was named for.
How much referral traffic do AI engines actually send?
Little in absolute terms, but growing at rates traditional channels never see. Conductor data cited by Digiday (December 2025) puts AI platforms at roughly 1% of total web traffic on average across 10 major industries. In the same analysis, Similarweb measured ChatGPT referrals up 52% year over year and Gemini referrals up 388% between September and November 2025.
Then came a step change. On May 7, 2026, ChatGPT began displaying prominent, clickable brand links in its answers. Similarweb (May 2026) measured the effect on clickstream data from April 30 to May 20: total ChatGPT referrals up 157.7% week over week, and referrals to homepages up 354.7%. The share of referrals landing on homepages jumped from 26–32% to around 60%, and pages viewed per visit rose from 3.8 to 4.7 (+24%).
What does the crawl-to-refer ratio reveal?
It reveals how asymmetric the exchange still is: AI platforms read far more pages than they send visitors back to. Cloudflare (August 2025) computed pages crawled per referred visit across its network:
| Platform | Pages crawled per referred visit (July 2025) | Trend note |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | 38,065:1 | Down from 286,930:1 in January 2025 |
| OpenAI | 1,091:1 | — |
| Perplexity | 194:1 | — |
| Microsoft | 40.7:1 | — |
| 5.4:1 | — |
Cloudflare also found that model training now accounts for close to 80% of AI bot activity, up from 72% a year earlier, and that Google referrals to news sites fell about 9% between January and March 2025, coinciding with the expansion of AI Overviews.
For a small business the reading is sober: being crawled is not being visited. Retrieval without citation is invisible work.
Is an AI search visitor worth more than an organic one?
Yes, according to the only study in our sources that measures it — Semrush’s — and by a wide margin. According to Semrush (July 2025), the average visitor arriving from AI search (non-Google sources such as ChatGPT) “is 4.4 times as valuable as the average visit from traditional organic search, based on conversion rate”. These users arrive late in their decision: the comparison already happened inside the conversation.
The same Semrush study projects — a projection, not a fact — that in digital marketing and SEO topics, AI search could send more visitors than traditional search by early 2028.
Fewer clicks, each one more qualified: that is the trade every visibility strategy now has to price in.
Did Gartner’s 25% search-decline prediction come true?
Partly, and only where we can measure: the decline is documented in clicks, not in query volume. On February 19, 2024, Gartner predicted:
“By 2026, traditional search engine volume will drop 25%, with search marketing losing market share to AI chatbots and other virtual agents” — Gartner press release, February 19, 2024 (verified via Search Engine Land)
The same note predicted that brands’ organic search traffic would fall 50% or more by 2028 as consumers embrace generative AI search — also a prediction, not a measurement. Two years on, the measurable picture is mixed. Zero-click reached 68.01% and AI Overviews cut clicks nearly in half (15% to 8%, per Pew), yet AI platforms still generate only about 1% of average web traffic (Conductor). What we cannot tell you is whether Google’s search volume itself dropped: none of the datasets above measure queries, only clicks. The measured decline is in clicks; on this evidence, the 25% volume claim remains untested rather than confirmed or refuted.
The strategic conclusion is not “abandon SEO”. Traditional search still drives the vast majority of measurable visits, while GEO decides whether you exist inside the answers. Where the two disciplines overlap and where they diverge is a topic of its own — see GEO vs SEO.
Are European SMEs ready for AI search?
Mostly not — and Italy, one of our home markets, is the clearest test case. ISTAT’s “Imprese e ICT 2025” (December 2025) shows AI use in Italian enterprises with 10+ employees doubled from 8.2% in 2024 to 16.4% in 2025; it was 5.0% in 2023. But the size gap widened: 53.1% of large enterprises use AI versus 15.7% of SMEs — roughly 37 percentage points, up from about 20 points in 2023. Among firms that evaluated investing and did not, lack of skills was a brake in nearly 60% of cases.
The Politecnico di Milano’s Osservatorio on digital innovation in SMEs (May 2026) is blunter: 76% of Italian SMEs have not invested in AI and do not plan to, and only 7% run structured AI training programs. Yet more than half increased digital transformation spending in 2025, 56% invested in cloud in 2023–2025 and 91% plan to in 2026–2028. In the Osservatorio’s own words:
“The real question isn’t how many SMEs already use AI, but how many are genuinely ready to use it effectively” — Osservatori Digital Innovation, Politecnico di Milano, May 21, 2026
The European Commission’s Italy 2025 Digital Decade report (June 2025) completes the picture: 70.2% of Italian SMEs reach at least basic digital intensity (2024 data), slightly below the EU average of about 72.9% and far from the 90% target set for 2030.
Read this as an opportunity rather than a lament. While three out of four competitors are not even planning an AI investment, the SME that gets cited in AI answers first captures a largely empty field. For most small firms the first battleground is local visibility in AI assistants — the “best supplier near me” class of question.
What should your business do this week?
Measure before you optimize — everything else follows from the baseline. A realistic first week for an SME:
- Create an AI-referral segment in your analytics. Isolate traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Record the current share, however small: that is your baseline.
- Run the citation test. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google — AI Overviews have been live in Italy and Spain since March 26, 2025 — the 10–15 questions your customers actually ask. Note whether your brand is cited, and who is cited instead.
- Check crawler access. Verify that robots.txt and firewall rules do not block the retrieval bots of the engines you want citations from. Cloudflare’s data shows crawling does not guarantee referrals — but blocked means invisible.
- Rework your homepage first. Around 60% of ChatGPT referrals now land there (Similarweb, May 2026). It should state in plain language what you do, for whom and where.
- Restructure key pages answer-first. A 40–80-word direct answer at the top, question-form headings, statistics with named sources.
- Decide how you will measure. Free server logs and manual prompt checks first; paid tracking tools only when volume justifies them. If you want the baseline audited and the before/after measured for you, that is exactly what our AI visibility service does.
The numbers above tell one coherent story: attention is migrating into answers, clicks are fewer but better, and most of your competitors are not moving yet. In 2026, that is what an opportunity looks like.
Frequently asked questions
How many people use ChatGPT in 2026?
OpenAI announced 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers on February 27, 2026. In the EU, the company's mandatory DSA disclosure declared approximately 120.4 million average monthly active recipients of ChatGPT search in the six months to September 2025, up from about 41.3 million six months earlier, according to figures reported on OpenAI's DSA help page.
Did Gartner's prediction of a 25% drop in traditional search come true?
Gartner published the prediction on February 19, 2024. What is measurable today: 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click to the open web in early 2026 (SparkToro, with Similarweb US clickstream data), and with an AI Overview present clicks on traditional results fall from 15% to 8% (Pew Research Center, US panel). AI platforms still send only about 1% of average web traffic (Conductor data reported by Digiday). All of these datasets measure clicks, not query volume, so on the available evidence the measured decline is in clicks; whether Google's search volume itself fell 25% is not something these sources can answer.
How much referral traffic do AI engines send to a website?
On average about 1% of total traffic across 10 major industries, according to Conductor data reported by Digiday in December 2025. Growth is fast, but the growth figures also come from a vendor: Similarweb measured ChatGPT referrals up 52% year over year and Gemini up 388% between September and November 2025. After ChatGPT's link update of May 7, 2026, Similarweb recorded total ChatGPT referrals up 157.7% week over week, with around 60% of them landing on the homepage.
Is traffic from ChatGPT worth more than traditional SEO traffic?
According to Semrush, the average visitor from AI search is 4.4 times as valuable as the average visit from traditional organic search, measured by conversion rate. Similarweb also recorded deeper engagement after the May 2026 update, with pages per visit rising from 3.8 to 4.7.
What is zero-click search and why does it matter for an SME?
Zero-click searches end without a click to the open web: 68.01% of Google searches in early 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024, based on Similarweb US clickstream data analyzed by SparkToro. If your customer gets the answer inside an AI Overview or ChatGPT, they will only find you if your brand is cited in that answer, which is the problem generative engine optimization addresses.
Are European SMEs ready for AI search?
Mostly not yet, judging by Italy — the market where the data is clearest. There, 70.2% of SMEs reach at least basic digital intensity (European Commission, 2024 data), and AI use in Italian enterprises with 10+ employees doubled to 16.4% in 2025 — but only 15.7% among SMEs, against 53.1% of large enterprises, a gap of roughly 37 percentage points (ISTAT, December 2025). The Politecnico di Milano's Osservatorio reports that 76% of Italian SMEs have not invested in AI and do not plan to. Comparable EU-wide figures for AI-search readiness do not yet exist, so this is one national picture, not a European verdict.
